The Anson A. Hinkley Freshwater Mollusk Collection
Anson A. Hinkley was an amateur malacologist born in
Farmersville, Indiana in 1857, but spent most of his adult
years in DuBois, Illinois.  He collected and studied the
taxonomy of freshwater mollusks in the eastern United
States, Mexico, and Guatemala.  He is particularly well
known for his collections and taxonomic work in the
southeastern United States, especially Alabama, where he
discovered two new genera of gastropods (
Amphigyra
and
Neoplanorbis) and many new species within the
genera
Somatogyrus (Gastropoda), Ancyclus
(Gastropoda), and
Quadrula (Bivalvia Unionidae).  Fifteen
species of mollusks have been named in his honor.

The Hinkley Collection at Hillsdale College

No one knows how or why a collection of mollusks from A.
A. Hinkley happened to arrive at Hillsdale College.
Although the Hillsdale College Museum was one of the
best college museums in the midwest at the time the
collection arrived, and received donations from a variety
of notable sources, including the Smithsonian, McGill
University, Brown University, and also from
notable
Anson A. Hinkley 1857 - 1920
collectors.  Unfortunately, there are few records or accounts of accessions after 1886, and the
Hinkley Collection was not known to exist until it was discovered by the present curator, Dr. Anthony
Swinehart, in the attic of the Knowlton Hall of Science (the former home of the Museum) in 1999,
days before the building fell to the wrecking ball.  The collection was in a wooden crate, and the

specimens were in small cardboard box lids wrapped in
Chicago Times newspapers dating 1893.  It is clear that
the specimens had been packaged by Mr. Hinkley, as
some of the newsprint had adhesive labels bearing his
name as well as his handwriting.  Unfortunately, most of
the specimens did not have location data.  However, those
that did were from Cypress Creek, Shoal Creek, and the
Tennessee River in Alabama.  Other locations include
Cadda Lake, Texas, Webster Parish, Louisiana, Winter
Park, Florida, Duck River, Tennessee, and a "pond at Iron
Furnace" (presumably in Alabama).  Most of the
specimens were collected in 1894, with the exception of a
few collected in 1892.  Eighteen ninety-four and 1897 were
years when Hinkley was known to have devoted his
collecting to the states of Tennessee and Alabama.  It is
assumed the most of the specimens lacking location data
came from these states.
The collection was rescued from Knowlton Hall and the
specimens were accessioned into the records of the D. M.
Fisk Museum and placed in hinged plastic boxes along
with any field collection numbers and / or location data
which were either written in pencil on notecards or
newsprint or on Mr. Hinkley's personal specimen
identification cards.  The collection includes 14 federally
endangered species and 2 extinct species.  A record of
the collection is provided below.
